A [new Canton proposal](https://lists.sync.global/g/cip-discuss/message/882) would make all synchronizers handling production activity on MainNet pay for their traffic by burning Canton Coin. It would also bring apps and validators using dedicated synchronizers into the same reward system as those using the Global Synchronizer.

Synchronizers coordinate transactions between Canton participants. Most validators use the Global Synchronizer, while some workloads run on dedicated synchronizers. Both are part of Canton MainNet, but they currently pay for activity differently.

On the Global Synchronizer, traffic burns CC and earns rewards for the apps and validators generating it. Dedicated synchronizers have historically paid license fees to Digital Asset instead.

The draft, written by Yiannis Varelas and Shaul Kfir and shared on October 9, proposes replacing that arrangement. Anyone would be able to run a dedicated synchronizer without negotiating a license, with production traffic paid for through CC burn.

Every synchronizer would start from the Global Synchronizer’s list price. Dedicated synchronizers would then receive lower prices as sustained traffic grows, aimed at making high-volume uses such as payments and trading more affordable. The Global Synchronizer would retain one price at every volume.

Operators could earn further discounts by committing to a level of traffic for at least a year and backing it with CC collateral. That commitment would be binding: shortfalls could draw on the collateral, and failure to top it up when required could lead to forfeiture.

Rewards for dedicated-synchronizer activity would depend on the CC actually burned after discounts. Operators would publish traffic reports to allocate those rewards. The initial reporting model would rely on operators reporting honestly, with stronger enforcement left for possible later work.

CC issuance and the existing division of rewards would remain unchanged. Test and development environments would not burn real CC.

The [draft seeks approval for the framework first](https://lists.sync.global/g/cip-discuss/message/882), with pricing details to follow in a second proposal. Its estimated rollout is universal burn in the first quarter of 2027 and volume and commitment discounts in the third quarter, subject to approval and implementation.
