Ekiden users have an October 21 deadline to prepare for an exchange upgrade. Elsewhere, Canton’s Development Fund has approved a grant for wallet checks before signing, HackCanton has named its finalists, and Universal Burn has moved into formal voting.

_This edition follows the [previous Canton today](https://cantonnews.org/canton-today-universal-burn-sponsorship-ceth-on-pinnaccle-and-builder-proposals), published October 20 at 05:53 UTC. It covers developments through October 20 at 13:34 UTC, including earlier updates not included in that roundup._

## Dates to know

### 1\. Ekiden asks users to prepare for its October 21 upgrade

[Ekiden](https://cantonnews.org/projects/ekiden) is preparing an upgrade affecting both Funding and Trading Accounts. Before **October 21 at 12:00 UTC**, it has asked users to [close open positions, cancel open orders and withdraw all assets from both accounts back to their Canton Party](https://x.com/ekidenfi/status/2112530013786341867).

The work is expected to run until approximately October 22 at 00:00 UTC. Ekiden says trading history and account progress will be preserved, including XP, referrals and trading volumes.

Ekiden also expanded its [API error guide](https://docs.ekiden.fi/api-reference/errors) on October 19. It explains when a failed request can be retried and how developers can check whether a batch of orders has finished processing.

### 2\. A Canton patch and Blockdaemon maintenance

[Canton 3.6.3](https://github.com/digital-asset/canton/releases/tag/v3.6.3) fixes slow database lookups that could increase load and delay consistency checks between participant nodes. The patch changes how those lookups run, not their results.

Separately, Blockdaemon has scheduled [Splice 0.9.3 maintenance for October 22, 14:00–15:00 UTC](https://8hylvm20h14z.statuspage.io/incidents/bzm13wh9dz5n), with up to 15 minutes of downtime per node. That notice covers Blockdaemon’s Canton services, not a network-wide outage.

The earlier MainNet upgrade was [postponed on October 19 after problems emerged in testing](https://lists.sync.global/g/validator-announce/message/224). Operators were told not to install Splice 0.9.0–0.9.2 on MainNet.

![Upcoming dates in UTC: October 21 at 12:00, Ekiden upgrade starts and account preparation is due before then; October 21 at 14:00, HackCanton final; October 22 at approximately 00:00, expected Ekiden upgrade completion; October 22 at 14:00–15:00, Blockdaemon Canton maintenance.](https://pnyaxwohgkgczwuvbaqg.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/article-images/cantonnews/2026-10-20/227a8bb025727e9afa72d4897cc10abe0ab6827ba1dd94a664b6443c6c4b6259-roundup-dates.webp)

__All times are UTC. Ekiden’s finish time is approximate, and Blockdaemon’s maintenance applies to its own services. ## Funding, applications and governance

### 3\. Wallet-verification tools receive grant approval

A proposal from development team FTP for transaction-verification tools [passed the Development Fund’s Tech & Ops vote](https://github.com/canton-foundation/canton-dev-fund/pull/617#issuecomment-6290671761) on October 20. The approved budget is up to **430,000 CC**: 190,000 CC for engineering and up to 240,000 CC tied to adoption.

The tools would let wallets check transaction data before signing. A wallet could compare the digital fingerprint it is asked to sign with one it calculates from that data, rather than rely only on the fingerprint supplied by another system.

Funding depends on delivery and adoption milestones within the [Development Fund’s grant process](https://cantonnews.org/inside-canton-s-development-fund-as-13-proposals-go-to-a-vote). Approval does not mean the tools are already available. This is separate from FTP’s grant-review assistant proposal in the previous roundup.

### 4\. Universal Burn enters formal voting

A [formal Super Validator vote on Universal Burn, CIP-0129, opened on October 19](https://lists.sync.global/g/cip-vote/message/830). The proposal has not yet been approved.

Following [Five North’s sponsorship](https://cantonnews.org/canton-s-universal-burn-plan-moves-forward-as-five-north-sponsors-cip-0129), the next decision is whether to adopt the framework for bringing production activity on dedicated Canton infrastructure into the CC fee-and-reward system. Detailed pricing parameters would come in a separate proposal.

### 5\. Grofty DEX seeks Featured App status

Grofty DEX has [requested Featured App status](https://lists.sync.global/g/tokenomics/message/1363) for its Canton swap and bridge service. It compares quotes across Cantex, Cantex Connect and OneSwap, showing fees and expected payouts before a user chooses a route.

The application follows the earlier [preview of Grofty’s swap service](https://cantonnews.org/grofty-previews-canton-swaps-across-oneswap-and-cantex). Grofty Wallet already has Featured App recognition, but the DEX is a separate application awaiting approval.

Users should also distinguish the routes. Cantex Connect and OneSwap transfers go directly to the venue; the route through Grofty’s own Cantex account temporarily places assets in that account while the swap runs.

### 6\. BitSafe documents Alpend’s shared lending controls

BitSafe has submitted [evidence of Alpend using shared approval controls](https://github.com/canton-foundation/canton-dev-fund/issues/882#issuecomment-6287269191) for changes to lending settings. The October 20 submission was [confirmed by the CTO of Palladium Labs, the team behind Alpend](https://github.com/canton-foundation/canton-dev-fund/issues/882#issuecomment-6288601483), and supports a 700,000 CC adoption-milestone claim.

The controls use [BitSafe’s Decentralization Manager](https://cantonnews.org/bitsafe-launches-decentralization-manager-for-canton-network-backed-by-1-million-foundation-grant), requiring two approvals from three members. Palladium holds two memberships and BitSafe one, so Palladium can meet the threshold without BitSafe.

The evidence documents changes already made to Alpend’s lending parameters. It is a new milestone submission, not a new deployment today, and neither acceptance nor payment of the claim has been confirmed.

## Builders and market access

### 7\. HackCanton names its final 12

HackCanton Season 3 has [selected 12 teams for its final](https://x.com/appsfactory_cc/status/2112510002644545925), scheduled for **October 21 at 14:00 UTC**. Winners will be announced live.

The finalists are Draw, Talang, Alluvren, Canborsa Lending, Umbra, Tavryn, Plimsoll, PledgeGuard, Exodus, Pari, CompressRail and Naust. The shortlist follows a competition that had [reached 58 projects before its submission deadline](https://cantonnews.org/hackcanton-reaches-58-projects-ahead-of-october-9-deadline).

### 8\. Zenith joins Singapore’s Digital Assets Association

[Zenith](https://cantonnews.org/projects/zenith), which is building Ethereum-compatible infrastructure for Canton, has [joined the Digital Assets Association](https://x.com/ZenithFdn/status/2112487982376583217), a Singapore-based industry group working on the connection between digital assets and traditional finance.

### 9\. Unhedged adds Spanish support and previews card indexes

[Unhedged](https://cantonnews.org/projects/unhedged) announced [Spanish translation across its platform and markets on October 19](https://x.com/UnhedgedHQ/status/2112197306099351752). Users can change the language at the bottom of the page.

It has also [previewed Pokémon and sports-card indexes](https://x.com/UnhedgedHQ/status/2112499417437659323) built from graded-card sales, with more information promised this week. Spanish support is available; the card indexes are planned.
