Canton passed $155 million in recorded network fees during the third quarter of 2026, placing it first among the blockchains in [CertiK Skynet’s latest comparison](https://x.com/CertiKCommunity/status/2109660270251647199). Its median daily fee total was $1.71 million across July, August and September.

The median helps put the headline in perspective. It marks the centre of the daily results when they are arranged from lowest to highest, making it less sensitive to a few unusually busy days. CertiK’s chart shows activity throughout the quarter, giving readers more to work with than a single total.

## Network fees, not asset value

Canton Coin, or CC, pays for use of the Global Synchronizer, the shared infrastructure connecting Canton applications. [Traffic charges are priced in dollars and paid in CC](https://docs.sync.global/deployment/traffic.html). Coins used for network fees are burned, which permanently removes them from circulation.

That is different from the value of assets changing hands. A bond trade can move a large amount of capital while generating a much smaller network charge. The $155 million figure measures fees, not the total value of trades, assets held in applications or profit collected by a company.

There is another useful distinction. [Canton’s technical documentation](https://docs.sync.global/app_dev/scan_api/scan_bulk_data_api.html#computing-total-burnt-canton-coin) describes several sources of burned CC, including traffic purchases, transfer-related charges and name registrations. A comparison of fee totals therefore needs matching definitions as well as matching dates. A traffic-only figure and a total-burn figure answer different questions.

## Burns and rewards together

Burning is one side of [Canton’s token model](https://www.canton.network/blog/canton-coin-rewarding-utility). Applications, users and infrastructure operators can also earn newly minted CC for their contributions. Fees remove coins; rewards introduce coins. Reading both together gives a clearer picture of changes in supply.

A separate snapshot of [CantonNews’ network dashboard](https://cantonnews.org/network), taken on October 13 at 00:45 UTC, makes that distinction visible. Its 24-hour panel showed 21.6 million CC in rewards minted, 15.1 million CC burned and net issuance of 6.5 million CC across 140 tracked rounds. These are rounded dashboard readings from a different period, not a reproduction of CertiK’s Q3 calculation.

## What it means for users

A network’s total fee bill is not the price of an individual customer’s transaction. Application providers can [absorb traffic costs or pass them through to users](https://www.canton.network/blog/earn-with-every-transaction-continuous-transaction-based-revenue-for-apps-and-assets-on-canton). What a customer pays depends on the service and its pricing, rather than the headline quarterly total alone.

That distinction is visible in everyday products. [Loop’s prepaid Fee Balance](https://cantonnews.org/loop-brings-prepaid-network-fees-to-canton-mainnet) sets aside funds for transaction costs, while [Console’s individual traffic balances](https://cantonnews.org/console-adds-individual-balances-for-canton-network-fees) let participants fund their own usage or another account’s. These are practical ways to manage the cost of using Canton, separate from measuring activity across the whole network.

Our assessment is that the most useful part of this update is the visibility it brings to a privacy-focused network. Fees offer a way to examine activity without exposing customers’ underlying trades. Pairing that information with rewards and the cost of actual services makes Canton easier to evaluate for both builders and users.
