# Canton’s universal burn plan moves forward as Five North sponsors CIP-0129

**By [CantonNews](https://cantonnews.org/author/cantonnews), Editorial Team** · Published 19 October 2026 · TECHNOLOGY, ECOSYSTEM

> Five North has formally sponsored CIP-0129, the proposal that would make every synchronizer on Canton MainNet burn Canton Coin for production traffic, and Cumberland has endorsed it. Here is what the proposal does, what the discussion settled, and what happens before it can take effect.

The proposal to bring all of Canton MainNet into one burn economy has its sponsor. Five North founder Yiannis Varelas, one of the proposal’s two authors, told the [CIP discussion list](https://lists.sync.global/g/cip-discuss/topic/121668399) that the team was ready to move ahead with CIP-0129, Universal Burn and Synchronizer Pricing.

> “After meaningful discussions we had with many network participants, we are comfortable moving forward with this CIP. Five North would like to officially be the sponsor.”

> Yiannis Varelas, founder of Five North

Cumberland, DRW’s digital asset firm, followed with an endorsement, while noting that the framework may need refinement and that key decisions on pricing and implementation are still to come. Sponsorship is what prepares a CIP for a formal Super Validator vote. CIP-0129 has not been approved yet, but it is no longer just a [draft for discussion](https://cantonnews.org/canton-proposal-would-extend-cc-burn-across-mainnet).

## What CIP-0129 changes

Canton MainNet runs on more than one synchronizer, the infrastructure that orders and confirms transactions. Most validators use the Global Synchronizer, run by the Super Validators, where traffic is paid for by burning Canton Coin and apps and validators earn rewards for it. Some workloads run on dedicated synchronizers instead. Their traffic burns nothing: it has historically been paid for through licence fees to Digital Asset, outside the network’s economy.

Written by Varelas and Digital Asset co-founder Shaul Kfir, CIP-0129 would end that split. Every synchronizer running production workloads would burn CC at the Global Synchronizer’s list price, currently $60 per MB or about $1 for a typical transaction before rewards. Apps and validators would earn rewards on that traffic wherever it runs, and running a dedicated synchronizer would no longer need a licence.

![Canton MainNet today compared with CIP-0129: dedicated synchronizers move from licence fees to CC burn, with rewards and volume pricing](https://pnyaxwohgkgczwuvbaqg.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/article-images/articles/cip-0129-universal-burn-compare-1792425234987.png)

Some things stay the same. The Global Synchronizer keeps one price at every volume, the split of rewards between Super Validators, validators, apps and the Development Fund does not change, CC issuance does not change, and test environments do not burn real CC.

## Cheaper at scale, with commitments backed by CC

To keep high-volume uses such as payments and trading viable, dedicated synchronizers would get volume pricing, plus further discounts for operators that commit to a level of throughput for a year or more and back it with CC collateral. The exact numbers are left to a second CIP, but the appendix gives an illustrative preview. Above one transaction per second, the price halves with every tenfold increase in throughput: 50 cents at 10 TPS, 25 cents at 100 TPS and 12.5 cents at 1,000 TPS.

Commitments go further. Posting collateral worth 20% of a year’s fees would halve the price of committed volume, more collateral would cut it again, and a loyalty discount would grow each year the commitment stays in place. With every discount at its maximum, committed volume would cost about a tenth of the volume price, so an app at 10 TPS would pay about 5 cents a transaction instead of 50. These are gross figures: most of what is burned is minted back as rewards, so net costs are lower.

## What the discussion settled

The [thread](https://lists.sync.global/g/cip-discuss/topic/121668399) drew detailed feedback, and the authors’ replies filled in several practical points:

- **Burns stay public.** CC never moves on a dedicated synchronizer, so every traffic purchase for one is a burn on the Global Synchronizer, visible through Scan. Transaction-level activity on the dedicated synchronizer stays private.
- **Rewards without exposure.** Operators would commit to per-provider activity each round and reveal only what is needed to mint rewards. A dishonest report could misdirect rewards among a synchronizer’s own users, but not claim more than the traffic actually paid for.
- **Any use case.** Volume pricing depends only on throughput, so it applies equally to high-value institutional products.
- **Permissionless in stages.** In the first release, a dedicated synchronizer would be registered by Super Validator vote, with self-registration expected in a later phase.
- **Licences phase out.** Digital Asset will move existing dedicated-synchronizer customers from licence fees to burn individually, with interim discounts available.

Not everyone agreed with the design. Tokenisys argued that pricing capacity by schedule, rather than discovering it in a market, invites arbitrage, and shared an alternative auction-based draft. Varelas called it additive, saying most companies currently want price stability, and that an intermediary could build an auction on top of the fixed framework.

## What happens next

If the Super Validators approve the framework, universal burn can be implemented without waiting for the pricing details. The authors estimate two phases, which they describe as ambitious targets rather than deadlines:

- **Q1 2027:** universal burn goes live, with interim discounts for dedicated synchronizers voted by the Super Validators case by case.
- **Q3 2027:** volume pricing and commitment discounts replace the interim discounts, once a second CIP sets the numbers.

For Canton Coin, the economics are straightforward. Licence revenue that currently leaves the ecosystem would become burn, more traffic would feed the same reward pools, and commitments would lock CC as collateral while making future burn easier to forecast. Canton already burns all of the fees it collects, and it [led every blockchain with $50.2 million in fees](https://cantonnews.org/canton-network-continues-to-lead-all-blockchains-in-30-day-revenue) in the 30 days to September 12. CIP-0129 would extend that burn to the parts of MainNet it does not yet reach.

## Quick answers

**What is CIP-0129?**

A Canton proposal, titled Universal Burn and Synchronizer Pricing, that would make every synchronizer running production workloads on MainNet burn Canton Coin for its traffic and earn rewards for it.

**Who sponsors it?**

Five North. Its founder, Yiannis Varelas, co-wrote the proposal with Digital Asset co-founder Shaul Kfir, and Cumberland has endorsed it.

**Has it been approved?**

Not yet. Sponsorship prepares it for a Super Validator vote, and the pricing numbers will come in a second CIP.

**Does the Global Synchronizer price change?**

No. It stays at the list price, currently $60 per MB or about $1 per typical transaction before rewards.
