# Circle and S&P Global receive Canton validator approval

> Circle and S&P Global are among 40 approved validator submissions. The decision advances their Canton plans, with MainNet allocation and onboarding still separate steps.

_Circle and S&P Global are named in the October 21 batch of approved validator applications._

Circle and S&P Global have received approval to operate Canton validators, joining a [batch of 40 approved submissions](https://lists.sync.global/g/tokenomics-announce/message/396) announced on October 21. Circle’s application sets out preparations for native USDC, while S&P Global plans to build applications on the network.

The decision clears the application stage. Each operator still needs a MainNet allocation and node onboarding before joining the live network. The 40 approvals should therefore be distinguished from 40 newly operating nodes.

## Circle’s native USDC plans

Circle’s [native USDC plans appeared in its earlier validator application](https://cantonnews.org/circle-s-validator-application-sets-out-native-usdc-plans-for-canton), which entered review on October 14. The approval notice retains that stated aim: Circle is preparing to launch native USDC on Canton alongside its existing xReserve work.

Canton already has a USDC-backed asset. [USDCx became available in December 2025](https://www.circle.com/blog/usdcx-on-canton-now-available-via-circle-xreserve). Users deposit USDC into Circle’s xReserve contract on Ethereum, and a decentralized protocol creates USDCx on Canton.

Native USDC would be a different asset. [Canton’s explanation distinguishes the two](https://www.canton.network/blog/usdcx-now-live-on-canton-unlocking-private-and-composable-usdc-backed-settlement): USDCx is backed by USDC held in xReserve. Native USDC is issued by Circle’s regulated affiliates and backed by cash and cash-equivalent reserves.

For users, the distinction matters when choosing a wallet or trading market. Support for USDCx does not automatically mean support for a future native USDC balance. Each application would need to support the specific asset a customer wants to use.

## S&P Global’s plans build on existing Canton activity

S&P Global’s application cites its technical expertise and a potential need to maintain data internally. Its stated contribution is to build applications on Canton.

There is already a relevant example within the group. [DRW and Marex’s swap referencing an S&P Dow Jones Indices benchmark](https://cantonnews.org/s-p-dow-jones-indices-and-kaiko-power-the-first-otc-swap-on-canton-executed-by-drw-and-marex), announced on October 13, was executed on Derivnex. A swap lets the parties take exposure to an index without buying its underlying assets. Kaiko tokenized the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index on Canton and supplied official index values used to value the trade.

That work shows why data control matters. The [benchmark token carries access permissions and usage rules](https://press.spglobal.com/2026-10-13-S-P-Dow-Jones-Indices-and-Kaiko-Enable-First-On-chain-OTC-Swap-Referencing-a-Tokenized-Benchmark,-Executed-by-DRW-and-Marex-on-Derivnex), allowing licensed participants to use the data while preserving S&P DJI’s intellectual-property controls.

## What a validator does

A [Canton validator is an organisation’s gateway to network applications](https://www.canton.network/blog/canton-network-primer-8-terms). It processes and checks the transactions it participates in, rather than receiving every participant’s private transaction history. Operators can host their own nodes or use a managed provider.

This differs from a Super Validator, which helps operate the Global Synchronizer, the shared infrastructure coordinating transactions across applications, and participates in its governance. Ordinary validator approval does not grant that role.

![Three distinct stages: validator application approval, MainNet allocation, and node onboarding. Approval alone does not establish a live node.](https://pnyaxwohgkgczwuvbaqg.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/article-images/cantonnews/2026-10-22/352b37453c5b4b490a68595ef7cd97fac35d643463f3b2ad8df231305f8016d0-validators-onboarding.webp)_The route described in the_ [_validator approval notice_](https://lists.sync.global/g/tokenomics-announce/message/396)_. Allocation and onboarding are separate from application approval._

The approval notice describes a MainNet waitlist, with allocations processed weekly and priority given to projects with working builds ready for activation. After allocation, an operator needs an onboarding credential from its Super Validator sponsor before its node can join MainNet.

Operating a validator gives a company control over the infrastructure it uses to access Canton applications and handle its transaction data. For Circle and S&P Global, approval advances that route while their product plans remain separate from the onboarding process.

_Read the_ [_October 21 validator approval notice_](https://lists.sync.global/g/tokenomics-announce/message/396) _for the complete batch and onboarding requirements._
