_A guide to the different jobs Canton apps do, from approving a payment to trading or borrowing._

You can use Canton apps to send a payment, swap an asset or borrow. Your wallet is where you approve an action; another service may arrange the trade or payment.

The [October 25 Canton Army app map](https://x.com/CantonArmy/status/2114157800960188823) brings many of these services together. Here is how a few of them work.

## Start with what you want to do

- **Manage assets:** use a wallet to see balances and approve actions.
- **Swap:** exchange one token for another through a trading service.
- **Borrow:** put up assets as backing for a loan.
- **Pay someone:** use a payment service to reach the right recipient.

## 1\. Use a wallet to approve an action

A wallet is an app or device for managing digital assets. A **token** is a digital unit recorded on the network. Canton Coin, or CC, is one example.

[Loop’s wallet guide](https://support.looptech.io/en/articles/16925385-how-to-integrate-your-app-with-loop) describes this sequence:

1. An app requests an action, such as a transfer.
2. You review it in your wallet and authorise it. This is called **signing**.
3. The completed transaction is recorded on Canton.

In this flow, the connected app does not receive your wallet keys or login details.

## 2\. Swap one token for another

A swap is an exchange. [Cantex Connect](https://cantonnews.org/cantex-launches-cantex-connect-bringing-wallet-agnostic-trading-to-its-exchange) lets a compatible wallet request one through a token transfer.

Three words explain the process:

- **Memo:** a short instruction attached to the transfer.
- **Preapproval:** permission to receive a token automatically.
- **Atomic:** all parts of the exchange complete together.

The [Cantex instructions](https://docs.cantex.io/developers/connect/) describe these steps:

1. Set up preapproval for the token you want to receive. Cantex recommends it for both tokens.
2. Send a supported token to Cantex’s swap address, naming the token wanted back in the memo.
3. If the swap fills, the output returns to your wallet. If it cannot fill, the transfer stays pending and you can cancel it.

The wallet must support transfers with memos. The relevant trading pools, which supply tokens for the exchange, must be available.

![Cantex Connect: preapprove the output token, send a supported token and output memo to the swap address, then complete an atomic swap or cancel a pending unfilled transfer.](https://pnyaxwohgkgczwuvbaqg.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/article-images/cantonnews/army-features-2026-10-25/redesign-2026-10-26/0c6cb92228ab07432e1b8a6302f096c559a1f0d3e160855bb6e74ee3b8e94506-post-one-cantex-transfer-swap.webp)

_The_ [_Cantex Connect process_](https://docs.cantex.io/developers/connect/)_: approve receiving, request the swap, then receive the tokens or cancel an unfilled transfer._

## 3\. Understand where a token comes from

An **issuer** creates a token. BitSafe’s BETH represents ETH, Ethereum’s cryptocurrency. It [launched on October 19 with trading on Temple](https://cantonnews.org/bitsafe-launches-beth-with-trading-live-on-temple).

The [BETH process](https://docs.bitsafe.finance/beth/how-beth-works) connects two networks: ETH is deposited into a bridge contract on Ethereum, and corresponding BETH is created on Canton. A bridge is the system linking those steps.

There are two different routes:

- **Buy existing BETH:** trade through Temple after its account setup and checks.
- **Create or redeem BETH:** use BitSafe’s separate checks and permissions. Creating tokens is **minting**. Redemption removes BETH and releases ETH to the approved withdrawal address.

Those account requirements are set out in the [launch announcement](https://blog.bitsafe.finance/p/bitsafe-launches-beth-institutional-grade-eth-on-canton-network). Trading existing BETH changes its ownership on Canton; the backing ETH stays in the Ethereum contract for each such trade.

## 4\. Borrow while keeping enough backing

Borrowing creates a loan to manage. The assets put up to back it are called **collateral**.

[ACME Lend, labelled beta](https://acmemarkets.cc/), describes this model:

- Lenders supply assets to shared pools.
- Borrowers use accepted assets as collateral to borrow another asset.
- The borrower monitors the backing and repays the loan.

If the backing becomes insufficient, **liquidation** can occur: collateral is used to repay some or all of the loan. Each market sets its accepted assets, limits and terms.

## 5\. Pay a person through a link or username

A freelancer could share a payment link instead of copying a wallet address. The client follows the service’s payment steps.

[HandlPay’s sending guide](https://docs.handlpay.com/getting-started/send-payments) says a sender can enter a social username or follow a payment link without a HandlPay account. The service handles routing and conversion.

HandlPay’s guide lists:

- **Crypto payments:** available.
- **Cards, including Apple Pay:** temporarily disabled.
- **Bank transfers:** coming soon.

For Canton, the [wallet options](https://docs.handlpay.com/help/faq) are a new in-app wallet requiring an invite code, or a compatible existing wallet. With an external wallet, sending stays in that wallet’s app.

Some services also combine jobs. HandlPay’s [June recap](https://handlpay.ghost.io/the-handlpay-monthly-recap/) described [OneSwap-powered swaps inside its payment app](https://cantonnews.org/handl-lists-on-oneswap-as-handlpay-becomes-first-payments-app-to-integrate-the-sdk).

## Two things behind the scenes

**Prices:** a lending service needs to value its collateral. [Kaiko’s Data On-Ramp supplies reference prices and other licensed data on Canton](https://www.kaiko.com/data-infrastructure/data-on-ramp) that financial apps can use.

**Featured App status:** this designation concerns [Canton’s app rewards programme](https://docs.sync.global/background/tokenomics/overview_tokenomics.html). Qualifying activity can earn CC under its rules. Product access still depends on the accepted wallet, account and asset.

One qualification is **locking**, setting aside CC under the programme’s rules. The [Foundation’s FAQ](https://intro.canton.foundation/featured-app-locking-faq.html) says a lock alone does not guarantee approval; [Featured App guidance](https://cantonnews.org/canton-approves-featured-app-guidance-2-0b-with-traffic-rewards-still-ahead) sets further conditions.
