# The Tie examines where privacy belongs in Canton’s financial markets

The Tie has published [“Where Privacy Belongs,” the final instalment of its five-part Canton research series](https://www.thetie.io/insights/the-canton-network-series-part-5-of-5). Its September 9 announcement introduces a report dated August that examines how privacy works in blockchain-based financial markets.

The report compares privacy built into assets or cryptographic systems, tools added to applications and wallets, and Canton’s approach of defining access through contracts.

On Canton, [applications set their own data-sharing rules](https://www.canton.network/blog/canton-network-primer-8-terms). Those rules determine who receives each part of a transaction. A trade can therefore involve several organisations without giving every participant the same view of its records.

The research describes private payments, business transactions with auditor access and transparent organisational treasuries. Privacy also depends on the asset: Canton Coin is more transparent by design than privacy-preserving stablecoins.
