The Sequencer is one of two components in Canton’s Global Synchronizer infrastructure, alongside the Mediator. Its role is ordering transactions. The Sequencer determines the definitive order in which transaction messages are processed. This ordering prevents double-spends and ensures that all validators agree on the same sequence of events. The Sequencer does not see transaction contents. It sees only encrypted envelopes and orders them. The contents are decrypted only by the parties involved in each transaction. Ordering without visibility and finality without exposure.
