CANTON 1.0.21: GDPR Data Minimization
Imagine putting sensitive personal data on a blockchain and later being legally required to delete it. What happens when every node has already stored a copy?
On traditional public blockchains, transaction data is broadly replicated across the network, making data deletion and privacy requirements difficult to manage.
@CantonNetwork takes a different approach. Participant nodes only store data relevant to the parties they host, rather than every participant keeping a copy of everything. Canton also supports pruning of historical participant data based on configured retention policies.
This reduces unnecessary data replication and gives organizations more control over the information they store.
My take: I think this shows why privacy is about more than hiding transaction details. Sometimes the best way to protect sensitive information is to make sure people who don't need it never receive it in the first place. For regulated organizations, that can make managing data much more practical.
