What is a Domain?
Most people hear the word "Domain" and immediately think it's something complicated. Well, It isn't.
Just Imagine Nigeria.
Each state has its own government, workers, and responsibilities, yet they're all part of one country, Nigeria. That's exactly how Domains work in the Canton Network.
A Domain is an independent environment where participants transact under a shared set of rules.
Each Domain:
✅ Operates independently.
✅ Has its own participants and infrastructure.
✅ Can continue running even if another Domain experiences an issue.
Now here's the interesting part...
What happens when two different Domains need to work together? A bridge right?
That's where the Global Synchronizer comes in. It allows independent Domains to communicate and settle transactions securely without forcing them to become one giant system.
With the above analogy, now you should take Canton as:
🌍 Canton Network = Nigeria
🏛️ Domains = States
🤝 Global Synchronizer = The bridge that helps states coordinate when they need to work together.
Key takeaway:
A Domain isn't an isolated blockchain. It's an independent environment inside the Canton Network, designed to work on its own while still being able to collaborate with other Domains.
That's what makes Canton both scalable and enterprise-ready.
