Why Institutions Measure Blockchain differently.

For much of the last decade, the blockchain industry has been obsessed with one question:

Which network is the best?

The debate has played out through comparisons of transaction speeds, gas fees, developer activity and total value locked. Every new blockchain promised to be faster, cheaper or more scalable than the last. Success became a race measured in transactions per second and ecosystem growth.

Traditional finance has been asking a very different question.

Can this technology support the financial system we already have in place ?

Wall Street Isn't Looking for the Fastest Blockchain

Public blockchain networks were largely built around openness.

Institutional finance operates under a different set of constraints.

Banks manage confidential client information.

Public blockchain ecosystems often compete for users and liquidity. Success is measured by attracting developers, applications and assets to a single network.

Financial markets don't work that way.

Banks, custodians, exchanges, asset managers, and clearing houses have spent decades building specialized systems designed for specific purposes. None of those organizations is looking to replace everything overnight.

Instead, they're looking for technology that connects what already exists.

This is one of Canton's defining characteristics.

Rather than requiring every participant to operate under the same governance model or share the same data, Canton allows independent applications to maintain their own privacy, permissions, and operational rules while still coordinating transactions across a decentralized network. The result is a "network of networks" where institutions retain control over their own environments without sacrificing the ability to transact with others.

DTCC's Tokenization Service creates digital representations of securities that already exist within DTCC 's custody. The underlying securities remain within the existing legal and operational framework while their tokenized counterparts can participate in blockchain-enabled workflows. Ownership rights, corporate actions and investor protections continue to be preserved.

This approach says a great deal about where institutional blockchain adoption is heading.

Rather than rebuilding financial markets from scratch, institutions are extending trusted infrastructure with programmable capabilities. It's a pragmatic approach that prioritizes continuity over disruption.

For years, blockchain was often positioned as an alternative to traditional finance.

Today, it's increasingly becoming an enhancement to it.

Why This Matters Beyond DTCC

Perhaps the strongest signal isn't the technology itself.

It's the collaboration behind it.

DTCC's Industry Working Group has grown to more than 100 participants, bringing together banks, broker-dealers, custodians, exchanges, asset managers, technology providers, and market infrastructure firms. They're not simply observing the project, they're helping shape how tokenized markets can operate at scale that level of collaboration reflects an important reality.

Financial infrastructure has never been built by a single institution.

Markets function because participants agree on shared standards, common processes, and trusted frameworks. Tokenization will be no different.

Its long-term success won't depend on one blockchain or one organization.

It will depend on whether institutions can work together to create infrastructure that is interoperable, secure, and operationally reliable.

For years, the blockchain industry has debated which network would ultimately win.

The fastest.

The cheapest.

The most decentralized.

Institutional finance appears to be asking a different question entirely.

Which technology can integrate into the financial system without compromising the principles that already make that system work?

Privacy.

Settlement certainty.

Interoperability.

Governance.

These priorities rarely dominate crypto headlines, yet they are becoming some of the defining characteristics of enterprise blockchain adoption.
