A new Canton governance proposal would bring a16z crypto into the network's Super Validator program. The draft submitted on September 11 sets out a role with a maximum earnable reward weight of 10, tied to milestones agreed with the Canton Foundation.
The proposal draws on a16z crypto's experience investing in blockchain infrastructure, payments, stablecoins and developer tools. Its stated aim is to strengthen connections between Canton's institutional users and the wider community of crypto developers and businesses.
Super Validators operate the shared infrastructure that connects Canton applications and participate in network governance. Their reward weight determines their relative share of the rewards available to this group.
Under the proposed arrangement, a16z crypto would earn its allocation as it completes agreed work. The specific commitments, timelines and commercial details would remain confidential until the firm and the Foundation agree to disclose them.
Rewards would accumulate in escrow during that process. The Super Validator Accountability Committee would check milestone completion, while the Tokenomics review would cover the associated rewards. Releasing them and activating the relevant weight would then require action by two-thirds of Super Validator operators.
The proposal remains a draft awaiting approval. It outlines a path for a16z crypto to take on a network role, with participation and rewards linked to work delivered for the Canton ecosystem.
