Canton has made Local Traffic Management available on MainNet, giving wallet providers and validator operators a more detailed view of transaction costs.
When a user submits a transaction, the validator pays for the network traffic needed to send it. The new feature links that cost to the account responsible, rather than leaving providers with only a combined view of spending at the node level.
Providers can use the accounting feature on its own. They can also switch on balance checks, which reject a submission when the account does not have enough traffic balance to cover it. Both options are disabled by default and need to be enabled by the operator.
Canton's rollout guide recommends starting with tracking, observing usage and funding accounts before activating the checks. Account balances are credited by the provider and do not top up automatically.
The feature covers transaction submissions made by a single party. A node's other traffic costs remain separate. Balance checks also happen before the final charge, so several transactions submitted at once can still take an account below zero.
For wallet providers, the addition creates a way to monitor each account's use of network traffic and decide how to manage that spending within their service.
