Canton proposal adds a way to transfer locked CC

An update to CIP-0127 proposes a way to change the owner of locked Canton Coin while keeping the lock in place. It would let participants move to a new custodian without first unlocking or replacing the funds.

Canton’s proposed locking system now includes a way to transfer ownership of locked CC without releasing the coins or changing the commitment they support.

The October 7 update to CIP-0127 adds transfer rules for locks used by Featured Apps and Super Validators. These locks hold Canton Coin against the requirements attached to their network roles.

The practical example is a change of custodian. Under the draft, locked coins could move to a new owner while retaining the same lock type, the same app or Super Validator being supported, and any remaining release schedule. The recipient would not need to supply a second pot of CC to replace the existing funds.

The current owner would initiate the transfer. Completion would require approval from both the recipient and the parties authorized to control the existing lock. The recipient could also choose who controls future actions on the transferred portion.

Transfers could cover all or part of a lock. In the draft’s example, 2 million CC moves from a 5 million CC lock to a new owner, leaving 3 million CC with the original owner. Both portions continue supporting the same Featured App.

That is different from unlocking. The coins would stay committed, and partial transfers would still have to meet the minimum amounts required for the resulting locks.

The proposal’s authors are also working on broader support for existing wallets, including partial transfers, replacements and unlocks of owner-controlled locks. That compatibility work remains under development.

CIP-0127 is still a draft. The new lock-transfer section is open for review as part of the wider plan to enforce Canton’s Featured App and Super Validator locking rules on-chain.
