A formal Canton Improvement Proposal has been submitted to designate Goldman Sachs and Co. as a Super Validator on Canton Network, with a maximum earnable weight of 10 under a milestone-based programme agreed with the Canton Foundation.
The proposal, authored by Abeetha Pitigala and currently in Proposed status, is classified as a Governance CIP. It establishes an umbrella programme through which Goldman Sachs can earn Super Validator weight incrementally as it meets a series of commitments to the Canton ecosystem. The specific milestones and timelines have been agreed privately with the Canton Foundation's Tokenomics and Accountability Committees and will remain confidential until Goldman Sachs and the Canton Foundation collectively determine whether disclosure is appropriate.
Under the reward mechanics outlined in the proposal, Goldman Sachs will not mint rewards on a block-by-block basis until milestones are verified and approved. Rewards will accrue in an Unclaimed Rewards Pool during that period, held in escrow. Upon confirmation that a milestone has been met and the associated calculation approved by the Tokenomics Committee, a two-thirds supermajority of Super Validator Operators will release the relevant portion of accrued rewards. If a milestone is not achieved by its deadline, the unearned weight associated with that deliverable will be removed from the total Super Validator weight.
The proposal cites Goldman Sachs's position in global capital markets and its role in institutional blockchain adoption as the primary rationale. It argues that Super Validator status could strengthen the alignment of tokenization services with large-scale institutional capital markets use cases and act as a catalyst for broader traditional finance adoption of Canton-native products.
Goldman Sachs is already a network participant. It has been involved in Canton-related working groups and pilots, and participated in Digital Asset's $365 million funding round earlier this year alongside other major financial institutions.
The proposal is subject to a two-thirds Super Validator vote for approval.
