Logical Contracts has requested 1.3 million CC from the Canton Development Fund to help teams bring existing Ethereum applications to Canton without rewriting all their contract logic by hand.
The proposed tool, called evm2daml, would convert verified Solidity source code into Daml, the language used to build Canton applications. It would then check the result against the original contract’s own tests and recorded transactions.
That checking step is central to the plan. A translated contract could look correct while handling a payment, permission or balance differently. The tool would produce a report showing where the results match and where they disagree, and identify code it cannot translate.
The Portugal-based team has set out a six-month project. The first stages focus on generating native Canton code and comparing its behaviour with deployed Ethereum contracts. Later milestones cover an open-source release, automated checks for developers and use by at least three independent teams.
The proposal also calls for generated tokens to follow Canton’s token standard, helping them fit into the network’s existing wallet and asset infrastructure.
Some translation components already exist, but the combined tool and direct checks on Canton are work proposed for the grant. The current translators would be released under the Apache 2.0 licence as part of the project.
The application remains open and is seeking a champion to support its review. Funding has not been approved. The full proposal sets out the milestones, limits and payment conditions.
