Canton proposes removing escrowed reward weight across eight organisations

The Foundation’s proposal covers 27.75 in Super Validator weight tied to expired milestones. Organisations have 30 days to submit evidence, with governance steps still required.

The Canton Foundation has proposed removing 27.75 in escrowed Super Validator weight across eight organisations after milestone deadlines and reduction periods passed without verified completion.

The proposal concerns reward allocations reserved for promised work. Affected organisations have been notified and given 30 calendar days to submit supporting evidence for reconsideration. The removals still have to go through governance.

What does “weight” mean here?

Super Validators help operate Canton’s Global Synchronizer, the shared service that coordinates transactions between applications. Reward weight determines an allocation of Super Validator rewards. It is not a count of nodes or a number of Canton Coins.

For a milestone-based allocation, rewards can accrue without being minted while the organisation works towards its commitments. This is the escrow arrangement described in CIP-0111, Canton’s process for reducing Super Validator weight. A CIP is a Canton Improvement Proposal: the public record of a proposed network change.

Several organisations can also share a node’s reward arrangements. That distinction is why an earlier proposal to make reward ownership easier to track separated individual rights holders from the operators hosting them.

Proposed removal of escrowed reward weight: YZi Labs 10, Zodia 5, Blockdaemon 4, Ledger 3, BitGo 2, Republic 2, Talos 1 and Zero Hash 0.75. Total 27.75.

Which allocations are affected?

The Foundation’s notice identifies the following expired milestones and associated escrowed weight:

  • YZi Labs: 10. Milestone-based Super Validator commitments.
  • Zodia: 5. Off-venue settlement, collateral management, acceleration and adoption.
  • Blockdaemon: 4. Transaction-volume and institutional-wallet adoption bonuses.
  • Ledger: 3. Ledger Live, Ledger Enterprise and adoption milestones.
  • BitGo: 2. An adoption bonus.
  • Republic: 2. Launchpad support and an adoption bonus.
  • Talos: 1. A pX settlement adoption bonus.
  • Zero Hash: 0.75. Adoption milestones for months one to six.

What happens next?

CIP-0111 requires a review and a formal governance process. Super Validators review the recommendation through an off-chain vote before the corresponding on-chain vote and configuration changes. The on-chain step is what changes the recorded reward allocation.

The Foundation will also make a separate recommendation about rewards that have accrued but have not been minted. Its notice leaves open the possibility of burning those rewards; it does not announce a completed burn.

What this changes, and what it does not

Reducing the affected weight would stop the associated allocation from continuing to accrue rewards. The notice does not say that all eight organisations are leaving Canton or that their existing products are being shut down.

This is also separate from CIP-0127’s approved design for enforcing CC locks. That proposal concerns the funds operators and apps must lock to support their rewards. This notice concerns completion of specific commitments.

The distinction matters for anyone following institutional adoption: a reserved reward allocation reflects work expected, while verified milestones establish what has actually been delivered.
