Canton is transitioning from Protocol 3.4 to Protocol 3.5, with the Canton Foundation highlighting Logical Synchronizers as the most significant change in the upgrade. The update is aimed at removing one of the operational frictions that comes with protocol upgrades. Until now, upgrades required transaction processing on the network to pause while the protocol moved forward. Logical Synchronizers are designed to remove that constraint, allowing Canton to upgrade without halting transaction activity.
For validators, the change should mean fewer disruptions during protocol transitions. For builders, it reduces the risk of downtime affecting applications and end users. For institutions, the upgrade supports the kind of continuous operation expected in capital markets infrastructure, where reliability and uptime are central requirements.
The move from Protocol 3.4 to 3.5 is therefore not just a technical version change. It is a step toward making Canton more resilient as a network for regulated financial applications, especially as more validators, builders, wallets, exchanges, and institutional workflows operate on top of the ecosystem. The Canton Foundation described the upgrade as a major step forward for uptime and developer experience.
