a16z crypto approved for Canton Super Validator role

Canton's Super Validator operators have approved a16z crypto's participation. The arrangement links rewards and a maximum earnable weight of 10 to verified milestones.

a16z crypto has won approval to participate in Canton's Super Validator program. The vote passed on September 21, with nine operators in favor and four not voting.

The approved plan gives the crypto investment firm a path to a maximum reward weight of 10. That weight is earned through completed milestones, with rewards released as the work is verified.

The arrangement brings a16z crypto's experience across blockchain infrastructure, payments, stablecoins, consumer applications and developer tools into Canton's Super Validator program. Its participation is tied to measurable outcomes for the network.

The specific work and deadlines have been agreed privately with the Canton Foundation's Tokenomics and Super Validator Accountability committees. Those commitments and commercial details will remain confidential until the Foundation and a16z crypto agree to disclose them.

Under the approved terms, rewards will initially accumulate in an unclaimed pool through a representative Super Validator. Once a milestone is verified and the reward calculation agreed, two-thirds of Super Validator operators must authorize the corresponding release and ongoing reward weight.

This makes the approval the start of a milestone-based process. If a deadline is missed, the remaining weight linked to unfinished work will be removed, and the Tokenomics Working Group will recommend how to handle the unclaimed rewards.
